DTEK Holding, which is owned by businessman Rinat Akhmetov, sees no possibility of importing coal for thermal power plants at the current tariffs, the Interfax Ukraine news agency reports. The DTEK Energo company’s Commercial Director Vitalii Butenko announced this on Thursday on the sidelines of Ukrainian Energy Forum, which was organized by the Adam Smith Institute.

"The Tsentrenergo power company currently imports Russian coal at the price of about USD 76 per ton. Compare with the prices [for thermal power plants]. It covers only UAH 840 per ton, i.e. even if compared to our coal price of UAH 1,500 per ton, then it covers 56%. There is no opportunity to import," he said.

According to Butenko, the cost of imported coal from South Africa (under the terms of CIF TIS) is UAH 2,762 per ton, UAH 2,291 UAH per ton from Russia (DAP), the cost of coal at Ukrainian state-owned enterprises is UAH 2,111 per ton, at DTEK it costs UAH 1,500 per ton.

Previously, DTEK contracted for two vessels with coal from South Africa with a capacity of 165,000 tons each, but new procurements are currently not planned. "Previously, we have contracted for two vessels. One has already been unloaded and the other is currently unloading at the port. However, the prices were very different," the commercial director of DTEK Energo said.

According to Butenko, deliveries from the Russian Federation are also not planned. Late last year, the holding company contracted for 750,000-800,000 Tons with full advance payment. However, deliveries were stopped for political reasons, and the Russian counterparts had to return all the advance payment.

As reported, a representative of DTEK Zakhidenerho said in late February that the holding company had begun importing coal from Poland.
