The Southwestern Railway, a regional division of the Ukrainian Railways public joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia), plans to restore three DS3 electric locomotives manufactured by the Dnipropetrovsk Electric Locomotive Plant (the Elektrovozostroenie state enterprise) jointly with the Siemens company (Germany) to operation by the end of 2017, Ukrzaliznytsia has announced.

Only two DS3 electric locomotives were in operation at the beginning of 2016. Specialists from Siemens Ukraine (a subsidiary of Siemens) examined the locomotives in 2016 and compiled a list of the components in need of repair. Specialists from Ukrzaliznytsia and Siemens Ukraine repaired five electric locomotives during the period of 2016-2017. As a result, the working fleet of DS3 electric locomotives has increased to seven.

The Southwestern Railway has 18 alternating-current electric locomotives of the DS3 model on its books. They were all manufactured and delivered in the period of 2004-2008. The Southwestern Railway currently operates only seven DS3 electric locomotives. Two of them are currently undergoing unscheduled repairs, and they will resume operation in October.
