The United Kingdom is preparing the "biggest ever" package of sanctions against up to 100 oil tankers that form a core part of Russia's so-called "shadow fleet."
This was announced in a statement on the British government's website, the CFTS portal reports.
The UK plans to announce a large-scale package of sanctions against the Russian "shadow fleet," which is used to evade restrictions on oil trade, during the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) summit in Oslo.
According to the statement, the sanctions package will target up to 100 oil tankers that form a core part of Russia’s "shadow fleet" operation and are responsible for carrying more than USD 24 billion worth of cargo since the beginning of 2024.
The measures are aimed at stopping the Kremlin from funding its war on Ukraine, protecting critical infrastructure in the UK and Europe, and protecting the environment.
"Every step we take to increase pressure on Russia and achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine is another step towards security and prosperity in the UK," said Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
