The Polish government will invest over EUR 57.7 million in the development of road and rail infrastructure on the Polish-Ukrainian border, according to the country's Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy.
As the Center for Transport Strategies (CFTS) reported, citing Ukraine’s Ukrinform state news agency, EUR 52.5 million will be allocated for investments in road and rail connections under the Interreg NEXT Poland-Ukraine Program 2021-2027. An additional EUR 5.1 million will be invested in "small circular economy" projects.
According to the ministry, these investments will "enhance road safety, shorten travel times, and make freight transport faster and safer" along the Ukrainian-Polish border.
At a meeting on 8 October, the Monitoring Committee of the Interreg NEXT Poland-Ukraine Program 2021-2027 decided to co-finance six new projects.
These include four road projects, for which the Polish government has allocated EUR 41.85 million. These funds will support the modernization of regional roads on the Polish side of the border near the settlements of Augustów, Tomaszów Lubelski, Sokołów Podlaski, and Krościenko.
Another project valued at EUR 10.72 million involves the renovation of tracks on the railway line No. 101 and at the Werchrata station on the Polish side. "In turn, the Ukrainian side will modernize the railway station in Lviv," said the Polish ministry.
The Ternopil Regional Development Agency will operate a new fund called the Small Projects Fund. The fund will finance projects in Ukraine worth EUR 20,000-90,000, focusing on the circular economy.
The ministry also announced that EUR 9.7 million will be allocated for financing a project for the modernization of roads near Augustów and Kovel on the Ukrainian side of the border to ensure better connection to the TEN-T network and increased mobility for residents of the border region.
EUR 7.4 million will be allocated for financing improved connections in Tomaszów Lubelski and Klevan on the Ukrainian side of the border to ensure faster and safer transport of goods and passengers.
In the Mazowieckie Voivodeship and the Ternopil region, EUR 8.1 million will be spent on the construction of a new road section in Sokołów Podlaski and the renovation of a bridge in Terebovlia.
In addition, EUR 16.5 million will be allocated for the renovation of roads leading to border crossings in Krościenko (Poland), Bolekhiv (Ivano-Frankivsk region), Nahiryane (Lviv region), and Zhornava (Zakarpattia region).
EUR 10.72 million will be allocated for renovation of tracks on the railway line No. 101 and at the Werchrata station in Poland, as well as for modernization of the railway station in Lviv to "increase capacity and passenger comfort, as well as to adapt the infrastructure to the growing cross-border traffic."
In addition, the monitoring committee approved funding for projects on the reserve lists, using savings from ongoing projects.
The committee initiated discussions on the 2028–2034 financial outlook and the continuation of Polish–Ukrainian cross-border cooperation under the proven program framework.
