Ukraine will be able to start the construction of a European standard-gauge railway (1435 mm) from the state border to Sknyliv.
Deputy Prime Minister for the Reconstruction of Ukraine and Minister of Development of Communities, Territories, and Infrastructure Oleksii Kuleba announced this on 6 November, the CFTS portal reports.
"Today, we launched the construction of the European standard-gauge railway, together with Magda Kopczyńska, Director-General of the European Commission's Directorate for Transport and Mobility. It will be built from the Polish border to Sknyliv, which is near Lviv. For this project, Ukraine has received the first grant of EUR 73.5 million from the European Commission," Kuleba said.
He added, "The line will have a total length of about 80 kilometers. Thus, we will expand direct and interoperable connectivity between Ukraine and the European TEN-T network. We plan to complete its construction by the end of 2027. This project is part of a broader strategy to integrate the Ukrainian railway system into the European transport area. It will facilitate the development of logistics, improve trade efficiency, and strengthen physical links between Ukraine and the EU’s main transport corridors."
As reported previously, the single-track European standard-gauge railway line to Sknyliv will be built from the Mostyska II railway station, to which a 1435-mm gauge track has already been extended.
The broader strategy also provides for the construction of freight and passenger terminals with 1435-mm gauge tracks in Sknyliv, as well as the extension of the European standard-gauge railway line to Lviv’s Main Railway Station. However, grant funding for these subsequent phases has not yet been approved.
