Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Finance Oleksandr Kava believes that Ukraine needs a European-standard high-speed highway connecting Kyiv to Lviv, the CFTS portal reports, citing the Ukrinform state news agency.
"Such projects can create the basis for attracting private capital and developing business. For example, the creation of a modern high-speed road network and the development of rail transport… It is impossible to develop the economy without them," he said.
Currently, traveling by car from Kyiv to Lviv takes approximately 7–8 hours while adhering to posted speed limits. "If we had a European-standard high-speed highway from the capital to Lviv, we would cover this distance in just 4 hours. This would represent significant time savings, allowing us to increase business efficiency and save people time, and time is a non-renewable resource," Kava said. "However, we still lack high-speed road connectivity."
According to Kava, active steps are being taken on the Polish side. The S12 expressway from the suburbs of Lublin to the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing is nearing completion, as is the S17 expressway to Rava-Ruska, which is part of the Warsaw-Lviv route. There is also the A4 motorway to the Krakovets border crossing, which allows drivers to travel 670 kilometers across Poland to the German border in just five hours at 140 km/h.
"Meanwhile, on our side, unfortunately, there are insufficient resources to build proper roads even to the nearest regional centers - Lviv, Lutsk, Ternopil, or Rivne," he said.
