The Kyiv subway will begin replacing the panels that accept tokens on its turnstiles with card readers on Wednesday, 12 October, the “112 Ukraine” television channel reports.

According to the Kyiv subway, replacement of the panels will begin at the Lva Tolstoho subway station.

"We are starting to replace the panels on the turnstiles in the subway, and it will no longer accept tokens. We see that more passengers are using cards than tokens in our subway, and, accordingly, we will redistribute the passenger traffic. We plan to completely withdraw tokens from circulation in the Kyiv subway by the end of 2017, and we are calling on all the people that use the subway regularly to buy cards," said Natalia Makohon, an advisor to the head of the Kyiv subway.

In addition to the subway stations in downtown Kyiv, the equipment at the Hydropark, Dnipro, Poshtova Square, and others will be replaced. The equipment at the Vokzalna and Lisova subway stations will be the last to be replaced.

As reported earlier, the number of turnstiles accepting tokens in the Kyiv subway will be reduced. It was also stated that passengers would now be able to use bank-issued contactless cards with the MasterCard PayPass system. This service has already been used more than 3 million times.
