The Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia) transported 26.6 million tons of freight in March this year, which is 6.6% less than it transported in the same month in 2019.

This is stated in data provided to the CFTS portal by Ukrzaliznytsia.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia, the railway company transported 12.05 million tons of domestic freight, 9.9 million tons of export freight, 3.3 million tons of import freight, and 1.3 million tons of transit freight. On average, Ukrzaliznytsia loaded 722,000 tons of freight per day in March.

Ukrzaliznytsia transported a total of 73.9 million tons of goods in the entire first quarter, including the 47.3 million tons of goods it transported in January-February.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia, the company managed to increase the productivity of its locomotives and increase the turnaround time of freight cars by 1.3 days to 8.02 days despite the quarantine and the lack of passenger transportation in March. The route speed of trains also increased by 8%.

As the CFTS portal reported, Ukrzaliznytsia increased freight operations at port stations during the quarantine period in March.

It was also suggested that part of Ukrzaliznytsia’s passenger locomotives could be redirected to freight operations during the period of suspension of passenger transportation in Ukraine.

As reported earlier, 310.1 million tons of cargo was transported by rail in Ukraine in 2019, which is 2.7% less than the volume that was transported a year earlier.
