1068 (1) Five additional trams provided free of charge by international partners have been deployed on Dnipro's tram routes.

The Dnipro City Council announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.

Leipzig donated 26 trams to Dnipro last year. The used trams are in excellent condition. Seven of these trams have been carrying passengers since November 2024. Five more have now begun running on the city's routes.

"Our cooperation with Leipzig started in 2019. Since then, we have received 76 trams. They are in good condition and only need to be adapted. The 26 trams that were delivered to Dnipro in 2024 are equipped with modern transistor-based control systems. They are more energy efficient. Thanks to these systems, the trams consume 30% less electricity," said Oleksandr Leschenko, deputy director of the Dnipro City Council’s Department of Transport and Transport Infrastructure.

During the adaptation process, the trams underwent diagnostics and major repairs to their bogies. This was necessary to adapt them to the standard track gauge, as the tracks in Dnipro are slightly wider than those in Leipzig. In addition, the interiors were upgraded and the lighting replaced.

"Our employees already have experience in adapting such trams to our gauge and operating them. We do all the work with the company’s own financial resources, without using contractors. We also repaint and brand all trams in accordance with the approved design code before deploying them on public routes," Leschenko said.

Currently, 12 of the 26 trams received by the city are already carrying passengers. The remaining 14 will also be adapted to the city's tracks and gradually put into service on the Dnipro lines.

"We received all the trams from Leipzig as a gift. The city paid only for the logistics and re-registration of these trams. They are not inclusive, but we are addressing this issue. We recently signed a contract with Tatra-Yug, a manufacturer of low-floor trams, and we expect to receive the first tram under this contract by the end of this year," said Mykyta Kerentsev, a senior specialist at the municipal utility company Dnipro Electric Transport.

The refurbished Leipzig trams are planned to operate on the tram route No. 5, but they can also operate on other routes. Similar trams are already running on the tram routes Nos. 5, 11, 12, and 15.
