Nearly 8 kilometers of European standard gauge track has been laid between Chop and Uzhhorod, about 2 kilometers of combined gauge track has been prepared, and electrification work is underway.
The Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.
Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction and Minister of Development of Communities and Territories Oleksii Kuleba, the Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company’s head Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Deputy Minister Serhii Derkach, and the Reconstruction Agency’s deputy head Mykola Boiko inspected the construction of the European standard gauge track railway between Chop and Uzhhorod in the Zakarpattia region
This project is part of Ukraine's strategic course for integration into the European transport network. It is being implemented within the framework of Ukraine's participation in the European Union's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program.
According to the statement, 8 kilometers of new broad-gauge track have already been laid, 7.6 kilometers of European standard gauge track have been laid (40% of the work), almost 2 kilometers of combined gauge track have been prepared (100% of the work), all necessary earthworks have been completed, and work is underway on electrification of the track, installation of cable networks, construction of engineering infrastructure, and modernization of passenger platforms.
Work has also begun on the renovation of the Chop railway station - an important transit hub - to improve conditions for passengers.
"The project is now entering its final phase, with works to be completed by August 2025. This European standard gauge track will provide direct access to the European rail network, significantly reduce logistics costs, increase the efficiency of international passenger and freight services, and create new opportunities for developing Ukraine's transit potential. In the future, we plan to further develop the network of European standard gauge tracks in Ukraine," said Kuleba.
