The Ukrainian industrial company Interpipe commissioned Interpipe Steel, an innovative electric steel smelting complex, 13 years ago, when no one was talking about decarbonization of the industry and the European Green Deal policy initiative was not even in the plans.
The investment in its construction amounted to USD 1 billion, the CFTS portal reports. The company considers this to be the largest environmental investment in Ukrainian industry since Ukraine gained independence. Oleksandr Harkavyi, director of Interpipe's Railway Products Division, emphasized this during a panel discussion at "Ukraine House Davos" at the World Economic Forum.
According to Harkavyi, Interpipe is now the most efficient manufacturer in terms of CO2 emission reduction because of the investments that the company made in the past.
"Thanks to the transition to electric steelmaking technology and the closure of open-hearth production facilities, we have reduced the carbon footprint of our railway products by 47%," said Harkavyi. "This is a significant achievement. We are ready for the 'European Green Deal,' and we are ready to join the EU."
On the fourth day of "Ukraine House Davos," panel discussions included the success stories of companies that invested in Ukraine during the war.
