As part of efforts to expand travel options for Ukrainian passengers, the Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia) and Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) are discussing the possibility of launching an ÖBB train between Vienna and Uzhhorod.
As reported by the CFTS portal, Ukrzaliznytsia announced this in a statement, commenting on a 2 April visit to Kyiv by ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä.
"During a meeting, officials explored the possibility of launching a new, more convenient transfer route between Kyiv and Vienna. In addition, railway specialists from both countries are working on launching a train with Austrian seater cars to Uzhhorod via Chop," Ukrzaliznytsia said.
The parties also agreed on joint training programs for train crews and technical staff. Selected Ukrzaliznytsia employees will undergo training on passenger and technical services in Vienna.
As reported previously, Ukrzaliznytsia is currently laying a European standard 1435-mm gauge track between Chop and Uzhhorod. Plans have been announced to start running trains on the new track in the second half of 2025.
