Accompanied by foreign diplomats and representatives of the Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia), Deputy Minister of Development of Communities and Territories Oleksii Balesta has visited the railway station in Fastiv that was destroyed in a Russian attack in the early hours of 6 December. The delegation included representatives of the embassies of Germany, France, and Switzerland, as well as the U.S. Chargé d'affaires Julie Davis.

The Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.

The attack destroyed a suburban electric train depot, which is a key civilian infrastructure facility. Preliminary estimates indicate that rebuilding it will require approximately UAH 100 million.

“This was a deliberate attack on civilian infrastructure. Three modernized electric trains, comprising 27 railcars, were destroyed. These suburban trains provided passenger services across the Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions. The estimated amount of damage is about UAH 300 million,” said Balesta.

Cleanup operations at the depot site are currently underway.

The official stressed that this was the first such large-scale attack on railway infrastructure in the Kyiv region.

The Fastiv railway station itself was also damaged beyond repair. The station building is currently being demolished down to its supporting structures. Essentially, it can only be rebuilt from scratch. Meanwhile, temporary modular facilities have been deployed to provide the minimum necessary infrastructure for passengers traveling to and from Fastiv.
