The Intertelecom company (Odessa) won the competition to provide broadband Internet access on Intercity and Intercity+ high-speed trains on 23 June, the press service of the State Railway Administration (Ukrzaliznytsia) announced.
Wi-Fi wireless Internet is already available in test mode on two Hyundai Rotem high-speed trains. Internet access will be introduced on all Intercity and Intercity+ high-speed trains before the end of August: 10 Hyundai trains, two Tarpan trains, and two KVSZ locomotive-hauled trains.
According to Ukrzaliznytsia, Internet will be available on at least 90% of the length of the routes on which high-speed trains operate.
"Certified equipment that is unique to Ukraine is used on high-speed trains, allowing stable high-quality access to the Internet even when traveling at high speed throughout the Intercity and Intercity+ rail network. During the test period, five versions of the technical equipment were tested and the version with the best technical characteristics was selected. To allow synchronization and proper installation of the equipment on the rolling stock, its designer and manufacturer - the company Hyundai Rotem - performed a significant amount of work," the press service said.
Intertelecom is a nationwide provider of mobile and fixed-line communication services based on the CDMA technology. The company has a telecommunications network and a network of base stations through which its services are available in more than 14,000 population centers in Ukraine.
