The European Union has decided to grant Ukraine EUR 76 million to finance the construction of a European standard-gauge railway between Lviv and the Ukrainian-Polish border.
Ukraine's Minister of Development of Communities, Territories, and Infrastructure Oleksii Kuleba announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.
The Coordinating Committee of the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) grant program has approved the project, which was proposed by the Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia).
This is the first full-fledged segment of the future direct European-gauge railway link with Europe: the Sknyliv-Mostyska II railway, which has a track gauge of 1435 mm.
"The European-gauge railway means shorter travel times, new transit opportunities, and reduced pressure on border crossings. At the same time, it represents an investment in Ukraine's economic resilience and new opportunities for businesses and logistics. This is a signal that Ukraine is already part of the European transport network and that our integration is ongoing. It is a critically important project for the country's ability to ensure stability and mobility, especially during wartime, despite the challenges posed by the full-scale invasion - closed airports, closed ports, and damaged infrastructure," Kuleba said.
