As a result of the dredging of its approach canal and waters, the Yuzhny port will be possible to accommodate Capesize vessels with a draft of 18.5 meters. The port authority’s head Maksym Shirokov announced this in an interview with the CFTS portal.

According to Shirokov, the dredging work began in February 2013. Since then, the port has managed to increase the maximum draft for ships from 14.5 meters to 17.5 meters. The maximum draft will increase to 18.5 meters by the end of June 2014. Thus, the Yuzhny port will be the deepest deep-water port on the Black Sea. The dredging work will continue. The port plans to reach a depth of 21 meters.
