The icebreaker Noosfera, the flagship of the Ukrainian scientific research fleet, arrived at the Vernadsky Research Base (the Ukrainian Antarctic station) on 3 January 2025.
The National Antarctic Scientific Center announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.
This is the icebreaker’s first visit to the Ukrainian Antarctic station in its fourth Antarctic season, but several more visits are planned.
"On the way to the station, we managed to avoid all cyclones, and even the Drake Passage was not too violent this time, with wave heights reaching a maximum of 3–4 meters," said the ship's captain Pavlo Panasiuk.
The ship delivered a technical team to the Vernadsky Research Base to carry out urgent modernization work, which was started before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Noosfera also delivered a lot of cargo necessary for performing the work to the station.
After unloading, the ship will head to the Chilean port of Punta Arenas to continue its Antarctic mission.
