The Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia) transported 14 million tons of freight in November 2023, which is 33.8% more than it transported in the same period of 2022 and 4% more than it transported in October 2023, according to the latest data.
Ukrzaliznytsia announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.
The company registered an increase in the volume of transportation of all types of freight.
"We have positive dynamics and, as a result, a record figure for freight transportation since the beginning of the large-scale war. It is important that the volume of transportation of export goods, which are critically important to our country, has begun to increase in addition to the volume of transportation of domestic goods. Thanks to the work of the Ukrainian maritime corridor, grain exports have also increased," said Ukrzaliznytsia’s Board Chairman Yevhen Liaschenko.
Ukrzaliznytsia transported 7.3 million tons of domestic cargo in November 2023, which is 19% more than it transported in November 2022. The volume of export cargo transportation increased by 56.2% to 6 million tons, the volume of import cargo transportation increased by 35.4% to 679,000 tons, and the volume of transit cargo transportation increased by 2.2 times to 65,500 tons.
Most of the freight transported by Ukrzaliznytsia in November 2023 was grain (up 13% to 3 million tons compared with November 2022), construction materials (up 61.8% to 3 million tons), iron and manganese ore (up 2.5 times to 3 million tons), and coal (down 7.7% to 2 million tons).
Grain, which is a strategically important cargo, accounted for the largest volume of export cargo transported by Ukrzaliznytsia in November 2023. The company transported 2.4 million tons of export grain in November 2023, which is 13% more than the volume it transported in November 2022 and 40.4% more than the volume it transported in October 2023.
The company transported 1.7 million tons of grain to seaports in November, up 1.7 times compared with October.
The volume that was transported through land border crossings decreased by 4.2% to 0.72 million tons.
As reported earlier, Ukrzaliznytsia transported 107 million tons of all types of cargo in the period of January-September 2023. This is 10.9 million tons or 9.2% less than the company transported in the same period of 2022.
In total, Ukrzaliznytsia transported about 135 million tons of freight in the first 11 months of 2023. This figure is less than half the 287 million tons of cargo that was transported by rail in the same period of 2021. The volume of freight transportation in November this year was also half of the pre-war volume: Ukrzaliznytsia transported 28.6 million tons of cargo in November 2021.
