The volume of cargo transportation on River Dnipro reduced by 10.9% to 8.6 million tons in the period of January-October 2020, compared with 9.7 million tons in the same period of 2019.

This was announced by the Rivers of Ukraine association, the CFTS portal reports.

According to the association, the volume of grain transportation reduced by 29.6% (from 3.92 million tons to 2.76 million tons) and the volume of transportation of construction materials and other goods by 0.5% (from 4.33 million tons to 4.31 million tons) in the period of January-October 2020.

The volume of transportation of metal products increased by 9.4% (from 1.37 million tons to 1.5 million tons) and the volume of transportation of petroleum products by 16% (from 37,400 tons to 43,400 tons).

According to the association, 9,160 ship journeys on River Dnipro were registered during this period.

"The Cabinet of Ministers adopted a priority action plan for 2020, which provides for the overhaul of four locks, in September. The government expects this to increase the volume of cargo transportation on the river by 15%, compared with the previous year," said Dmytro Kozachenko, executive director of the Rivers of Ukraine association.

As reported, the volume of cargo transportation on River Dnipro fell by 10.8% to 6.142 million tons in the period of January-August 2020, compared with 6.884 million tons in the corresponding period of 2019. The fall in the volume of cargo transportation was due mainly to a fall in the volume of grain cargo transportation on the river. In the first eight months of this year, 2.04 million tons of grain was transported on River Dnipro. This is 28.3% less than the 2.85 million tons that were transported on the river in the corresponding period of last year.

As the CFTS portal reported earlier, the Ministry of Infrastructure has announced navigation on River Dnipro is planned throughout the year if weather conditions are favorable.
