Construction of the lower part of the new dual-track Beskyd railway tunnel is continuing in the Carpathians. Builders have drilled 1,414 meters out of the planned 1,764 meters, the Ukrzaliznytsia public railway company announced.
In addition, a passage between the old and the new tunnels is being constructed at a distance of 411 meters from the eastern portal.
The average speed of the drilling work is 6.5-7 meters per day.
Construction of the new Beskyd tunnel is one of the priorities of the railway industry. Implementation of this major infrastructure project will increase the capacity of the fifth European transport corridor (Italy - Slovenia - Hungary - Slovakia - Ukraine). Construction of the tunnel started on 29 October 2013. It is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2018. The first phase of construction of the tunnel was completed in January 2016.
