Work is currently underway on a project that will link Hungary with the Zakarpattia region via a European-gauge railway.

Ukraine’s Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelian announced this during a visit to Uzhhorod last week, the CFTS reports.

"We are developing a new rail link from Hungary to Mukacheve. It should be a narrow-gauge, European-standard railway. I hope that it will be convenient for residents of the region and that we will achieve a good result in terms of rail links," Omelian said.

As previously reported, the section with the longest combined rail tracks (1.520 mm + 1.435 mm (European) rail tracks) in Ukraine is in the Zakarpattia region on the Chop-Batieve-Mukacheve segment (about 40 kilometers, electrified) and the Batieve-Korolevo-Diakove segment (about 80 kilometers).
