The Russian Railways has submitted an initial application to participate in the privatization of the port of Thessaloniki. The company’s representative in Greece Sergei Golovin announced this, the Gazeta.ru publication reports, citing the RIA Novosti news agency.

"We have submitted a statement of interest. We are going to participate in the tender together with the Gek Terna company,” said the representative.

The Russian Railways and Gek Terna have filed a joint application for purchase of the Trainose rail operator and the ROSCO railway repair company. They have qualified for the second stage of the relevant competition. The Russian Railways is only interested in buying the three assets together.

The Russian Railways was previously interested in acquiring the Greek port of Piraeus, but the management of the company later decided to focus on buying the port of Thessaloniki.
