The Ukrainian Railways public joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia) has completed the electrification of the 12-kilometer Zolotnishine-Potoki railway stretch, which the Ferrexpo company uses to transport its products from the Poltava ore mining and enrichment plant. According to Ukrzaliznytsia, the ceremonial opening of the railway stretch is scheduled for September 6.

The electrification of the Zolotnishine-Potoki railway stretch is of great importance for cargo transportation because as Zolotnishine is one of the largest cargo-generating train stations in Ukraine and the largest generators of export iron-ore freight.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia’s Magistral media center, 10 pairs of freight trains are involved in transportation of this type of cargo to seaports.

Five electric locomotives may be used to service these trains. According to preliminary calculations, the cost will amount to UAH 155,400 per day, which is UAH 204,900 per day less than the current cost.

Annual cost savings will reach UAH 49.9 million. Thus, the cost of the project is expected to be recouped in three years, the media center wrote.
