The general director of the State Railway Administration (Ukrzaliznytsia), Serhii Bolobolin, has resigned, the press service of the administration told the Interfax Ukraine news agency.

Bolobolin announced his resignation to Ukrzaliznytsia’s employees.

First Deputy General Director Vitalii Zhurakovskyi is currently the acting general director of the administration.

According to the press service, Bolobolin made the decision to resign after speaking with Ukraine’s new Infrastructure Minister Maksym Burbak, who recommended this decision for political expediency.

"The Ministry of Infrastructure has no complaints against the general director relating to fulfillment of its professional responsibilities and conduct of the business operations of the Ukrainian railways. In turn, S. Bolobolin at a meeting with the head of the transport industry asked for preservation of the staff of the enterprise and appointment of a new head from among the professionals that enjoy the support of all Ukrainian railway workers,” Ukrzaliznytsia said.

Bolobolin was appointed as the general director of Ukrzaliznytsia in January 2013.
