The German port of Duisburg, the largest inland river port in Europe and the world, has announced that it has begun handling Ukrainian grain, including corn.
"Rhenus Port Logistics Rhein-Ruhr is now providing a weatherproof port terminal and special loading equipment for grain shipments from Ukraine at the Port of Duisburg (Rhein-Ruhr Terminal). This will enable the feed maize to be transported efficiently from Odesa via Duisburg to its final destination," the CFTS portal quoted the port authority as saying.
"With the support of Duisport rail, up to four block trains are currently arriving at the Port of Duisburg every month. Upon arrival in Duisburg, the corn is transferred directly from the containers to inland waterway vessels," the port's press service added.
As reported earlier, the Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia) has announced that it plans to launch regular container and piggyback trains between Ukraine and the Port of Duisburg together with Duisburger Hafen Aktiengesellschaft.
According to the company, all cargoes transported by rail or road will be accepted for transportation.
The Duisburg River Port handles over 4 million TEUs annually, with containers accounting for only half of the cargo handled there.
