The volume of container transportation through Ukraine increased by 10.7% to more than 425,000 TEU in 2020, compared with 2019. The total transported on container trains increased by 41% to 230,000 TEU in 2020, compared with 2019.
This is stated in data from the Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia), the CFTS portal reports.
According to Ukrzaliznytsia, direct container trains from China began arriving in Ukraine for the first time in 2020, and 22 of them were received by the end of the year. As the CFTS reported, the first train from China arrived in Kyiv on June 8.
Ukrzaliznytsia’s Liski division signed a memorandum of cooperation on development of a Turkey-Ukraine-Poland multimodal route with the Ukrferry and FerriPlus companies on December 24, 2020. Ukrzaliznytsia signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation with DHL Global Forwarding in November. Under this memorandum, Ukrzaliznytsia and DHL will organize container trains, attract additional cargo, and expand the geography of transportation.
