Rail links between Poland and Lithuania are expected to resume at the end of the first quarter of 2016. A new train will operate on the newly opened Rail Baltica line between Bialystok and Kaunas, the Polish publication nakolei.pl reports.
The Polish company Przewozy Regionalne and the Lithuanian company Lietuvos Geležinkeliai are organizing the rail link. Representatives of both operators initialed the relevant agreement. The signing of the agreement took place in the Polish city of Bialystok.
The Bialystok-Kaunas train will run mostly on weekends. The train will depart from Bialystok on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays and depart from Kaunas on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Two pairs of trains will operate on the route on weekends.
The train’s route passes through the train stations Bialystok, Sokolka, Augustow, Suwalki, Sestokai, and Kaunas. The travel time is about four hours. The ticket price should not exceed EUR 10. Discounts will be granted to students and groups.
As reported, implementation of the Rail Baltica project will be completed in 2025. It involves construction of a railway with European gauge from the Polish-Lithuanian border to Tallinn via Kaunas and Riga. The Bialystok-Kaunas railway stretch was opened in mid-October.
