The Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (JSC Ukrzaliznytsia) has announced the first routes of the trains that will run from Uzhhorod on the 1435 mm European standard gauge railway currently under construction.

"According to preliminary plans, two pairs of Budapest-Uzhhorod-Budapest trains, one pair of Vienna - Uzhhorod - Vienna trains, one pair of Uzhhorod - Budapest - Uzhhorod trains, and two pairs of Kosice - Uzhhorod - Kosice trains will operate on the Chop - Uzhhorod section of the 1435-mm gauge railway," said Yurii Nemchykov, director of Ukrzaliznytsia’s Corporate Finance Department.

Nemchykov stated this on the M-Studio TV channel, the CFTS portal reports.

"The plan is for trains to arrive on the second track. At present, the project envisages that border and customs checks will take place in Chop. The issue of moving border and customs checks to Uzhhorod is still being resolved," Nemchykov said, adding that Ukrzaliznytsia plans to complete the project for the construction of the European standard gauge railway between Chop and Uzhhorod in July 2025.

As reported earlier, as of 8 April, 8 kilometers of new broad-gauge track had been laid, 7.6 kilometers of European standard gauge track had been laid (40% of the work), and almost 2 kilometers of combined gauge track had been prepared (100% of the work).

Ukrzaliznytsia has announced that it is holding talks with the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) on the possibility of launching an ÖBB train between Vienna and Uzhhorod.
