Authorities in the Kiev region are discussing the possibility of building a monorail that will connect the capital of Ukraine and Bila Tserkva, which is a major regional administrative center. The Kiev regional administration announced this in a press release.
The idea of a monorail was named among other investment projects planned for implementation in the Kiev metropolitan area during an economic forum in Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky, which was attended by representatives of the business community and regional authorities, as well as members of the public.
According to one of the most influential businesspeople in the region, more than 15,000 people travel from Bila Tserkva to work in the capital and back every day. A monorail could reduce the travel time between the cities to 40 minutes.
The following projects were also proposed: construction of a tunnel under the Dnieper River near Ukrainka, construction of a Kiev-Boryspil monorail, creation of the “Uzin aeropolis” for development of cargo flights between Asia and Europe, construction of offloading hubs for trucks at the entrance to the capital, and construction of a new ring road around Kiev.
As reported, in recent years the authorities have discussed construction of a railway between Kyiv and the Boryspil airport, but a decision was made in April this year to abandon the project because of it is economically unfeasible.
It was announced in June that Ukraine and China were willing to discuss the possibility of redirecting the loan funds that were provided for financing the Air Express project (the project for construction of a railway link between the Boryspil airport and the main railway station in Kiev) to other projects. The total amount of the loan that the Export-Import Bank of China provided for financing the Air Express project is USD 372 million, out of which the Ukrainian side has already spent USD 52 million.
