The Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia) has begun the groundwork for laying 1435-mm European standard-gauge tracks on the Chop - Uzhhorod railway section, and the company is currently assembling a rail-and-sleeper grid for this railway section at its facilities.

Ukrzaliznytsia announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.

The repair of artificial structures along the railway section is also underway.

"Earlier, railway workers completed a number of preparatory tasks, including clearing the construction site of vegetation and bushes. They also completed the routine maintenance of track No. 2 at the Strumkivka station, which facilitated the movement of railway construction equipment," Ukrzaliznytsia said.

The Chop - Uzhhorod European standard-gauge railway construction project is scheduled for completion by July 2025.

The project involves the construction of 22 km of European standard-gauge tracks; the reconstruction of artificial structures, facilities, and engineering support networks; and equipping the track with two-way semi-automatic interlocking and microprocessor-based dispatching centralization devices.

The total cost of the project is UAH 1.3 billion, 50% of which will be provided through the European Union's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) grant program.

Ukrzaliznytsia secured the opportunity to implement this project by successfully participating in the CEF project selection competition in 2022.
