The State Railway Administration (Ukrzaliznytsia) increased its working fleet of grain cars by 3,200 or 34% to 12,960 in March, compared with March 2013, the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia has announced.
According to Ukrzaliznytsia, this number of cars is sufficient to transport 40 million tons of grain cargoes.
Ukrzaliznytsia said that the fleet of grain cars increased as a result of an increase in the number of repaired cars, a reduction in the number of cars held in long-term reserve, and return of grain cars from abroad.
The total turnover of a grain car reduced by 0.05 days to 10.31 days during the period of March 1-23 2014, compared with the corresponding period of 2013.
The improvement of this indicator was due to the reduction of the turnover of empty grain cars to 6.64 days, compared with 6.7 days last year, and the reduction of the turnover of transit cars to 2.71 days from 2.92 days last year (-0.21 days).
Loads reduced during holidays and weekends because of lack of orders from grain traders and other cargo owners, as well as due to the irregular approach of ships.
