Ukrainian Railways transported almost 77 million tons of cargo in January-March, which is 24.5 percent less than it transported in the same period of last year. The State Railway Administration (Ukrzaliznytsia) announced this, citing projected data.

Among the main causes of the significant drop cargo transportation are the fighting in eastern Ukraine and the destruction of a large number of railway facilities on the Donetsk Railway, which usually accounts for the largest volume of goods.

The freight transport volume on the railways began plummeting in June last year and plummeted by 34.1 percent in 2014 compared with 2013.
