The State Railway Administration (Ukrzaliznytsia) will continue to implement the program for electrification of railways in 2014. Ukrzaliznytsia plans to start electrification of the Dolinskaya-Nikolayev segment of the Odessa railway in the direction of seaports in the Nikolayev region and later electrify the Kolosovka-Nikolayev segment. The press service of Ukrzaliznytsia announced this, citing the head of Ukrzaliznytsia’s department of electrification and power supply, Vitalii Maksymchuk.
"This will ease the movement of freight and passenger trains, and we hope to ‘cut the ribbon’ in Nikolayev by the end of next year," said Maksymchuk.
According to him, design documentation for electrification of the Volnovakha-Kamysh-Zarya-Zaporozhe is also currently being developed. In addition, design work on electrification of the segment from the state border in the direction Ovruch-Korosten-Zhitomir-Berdichev will begin next year with the aim of connecting Belarus to the seaports in the Odessa region.
The estimated costs of electrification are about UAH 2 billion for the Dolinskaya-Nikolayev-Kolosovka segment and about UAH 2.8 billion for the Volnovakha-Kamysh-Zarya-Zaporozhe segment. The cost of electrification of the Ovruch-Korosten-Zhitomir-Berdichev segment has not yet been determined.
According to Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukrainian railways currently have an operating length of almost 22,000 kilometers, of which 47.4% is electrified. Electrification of the abovementioned segments is expected to be financed with loans from international financial organizations.
