Ukrainian railways transported 9.1 million passengers on long-distance routes in July, down 9.4% or 0.6 million compared with July 2014, the Interfax Ukraine news agency reports, citing the press service of the State Railway Administration (Ukrzaliznytsia).
Revenue from these transport services amounted to UAH 594.8 million, which is 13.4% or UAH 70.1 million more than the planned revenue. At the same time, the expected cost of transporting passengers reduced by almost 6.7% compared with the corresponding period of last year.
"At the same time, passenger transportation remains unprofitable. According to estimates, losses from long-distance transportation of passengers reduced by 39.8% in July 2015 compared with July 2014 and reduced by 17% in the first seven months of this year compared with the corresponding period of last year," Ukrzaliznytsia said.
In July, railways scheduled 10 additional trains, added more than 200 additional wagons on southward and westward routes, and increased the frequencies of seven passenger trains.
"Thanks to the scheduling of additional trains, railways managed to ensure availability of tickets to Odessa, Genichesk, Berdyansk, Ivano-Frankivsk, and other popular cities at ticket offices," Ukrzaliznytsia said.
