The Yuzhny Port Authority intends to begin a project for reconstruction of the Yuzhny seaport’s berths Nos. 5-8 in 2016 with the aim of increasing their design depths. The Yuzhny Port Authority’s head, Maksym Shirokov, announced this at a press conference, the CFTS correspondent reports.
The deepwater berths Nos. 5-6 will be deepened to 20-21 meters. "Their builders left us with a solid margin that allowed the depth to be increased to 19 meters. However, the design does not allow to go deeper – the berth can ‘float away’ if we dig deeper. We will reconstruct them to ensure that when the depth of the approach canal reaches 20 or 21 meters, the berths will also match it, this enabling them to accommodate vessels with the maximum draught," the head of the port authority said.
The berths Nos. 7-8 will be strengthened and their depths increased from 14-15 to 17 meters. "We are completing the first stage of the feasibility study based on ChernomorNIIproekt, after which we will switch to design, with the aim of beginning this year, concluding a contract, etc. All this will enable the Yuzhny Commercial Seaport to begin implementing a project for creation of a specialized complex for transshipment of bulk cargo at the rear of the berths Nos. 5-9," Shirokov said.
The press service of the Yuzhny Port Authority said that reconstruction of the four berths will cost a total of UAH 1.25 billion and that implementation of the project will take two years.
According to Shirokov, the future plans of the port authority include construction of an auxiliary berth to serve as a base for the port’s service fleet for anchoring the port’s service vessels and maritime search-and-rescue vessels (this project will cost UAH 28 million), construction of the berth No. 25 for the MV Cargo company, and construction of the berths Nos. 10-12a berths (the port is seeking an investor for this project). Construction of a dedicated berth No. 27b for the Transoil company and several other projects are also possible.
