The Chișinău Airport handled 4.1 million passengers in 2024, a 46% increase compared to the previous reporting period. This indicator places the airport among the most successful in Europe in the "medium" category, which includes airports handling between 1 and 10 million passengers annually.
As reported by the CFTS portal, citing the DW news broadcaster, the Airports Council International (ACI Europe) ranked Chișinău Airport second in terms of efficiency, with a profit of EUR 17.7 million.
The airport also broke records in early 2025: 330,000 passengers passed through the airport in January, a 62% increase year-on-year, while February saw a 50.2% increase.
Up to one-third of the passengers are Ukrainian citizens, reflecting the impact of the war on passenger traffic in the region. The increase in passenger traffic attributed to Ukrainians has been observed for the second consecutive year.
With Ukraine’s airspace still closed because of the war, Ukrainian airlines have established a hub at Chișinău Airport to operate flights to order from Moldovan firms. In mid-2023, for example, Ukrainian carrier SkyUp secured European Union registration and set up a base for five of its aircraft in the Moldovan capital. From May 2025, the airline will launch its own scheduled flights from Chișinău to ten European destinations.
In addition, Wizz Air will base its third Airbus A320 aircraft at Chișinău Airport from 26 October 2025. This will significantly expand the airport’s route network and increase passenger traffic.
