The Izmail seaport began handling a new kind of transit cargo - grain from Moldova - in in the first half of this year. The Izmail seaport’s Director Andrii Yerokhin announced this during an interview on the Pervyi Izmailskyi television channel.
This year, the Izmail seaport will handle grains from Moldova as an experiment to evaluate the capability of the port.
"Transit grain is our strong point in the future," said Yerokhin. According to him, a large proportion will come from Gagauzia. An agreement has already been reached with partners from Comrat. In addition, grain will be shipped from the territory of Moldova itself.
According to Yerokhin, about 1.5 million tons of grain is exported from Moldova annually. The capacity of Moldova’s Giurgiulesti port is not enough to process such volumes. "We have the right to make a stab at about 300,000 tons of grain," he said.
An elevator for handling transit grain will be built at the port, and the site for construction of this facility has been chose.
Moldova previously transshipped grain through either its own port of Giurgiulesti or the Ukrainian port of Reni.
