The Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine has fined the Lukoil Aviation Ukraine company for selling aviation fuel at excessively high prices at the Kharkov and Odessa airports, the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine’s head Yurii Terentiev announced on his Facebook page.
"The Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine has just adopted a decision on the case of abuse of the monopoly position of Lukoil Aviation Ukraine, which involved the excessive prices for aviation fuel [at the Kharkov and Odessa airports]. We will impose a fine of UAH 18.718 million…” Terentiev wrote.
He added that the details and the text of the decision would be published later.
As reported, the Odessa region’s Governor Mikheil Saakashvili proposed in early July that the Security Service of Ukraine launch an investigation into the issue of expensive aviation fuel at the Odessa airport. Later that month, it emerged that sale of cheaper fuel to Ukraine International Airlines had begun.
It was reported on 25 May that the Lukoil Ukraine Aviation company, which is the fuel supplier at the Odessa airport, had switched to the Jet A-1 brand of aviation fuel (imported from Bulgaria) and lowered its price from USD 1,300 to USD 1,050 per ton. Considering the fact that Saakashvili's statement was made in July, it can be assumed that the cost of aircraft fuel at the Odessa airport is now about USD 900 per ton. However, it is not known whether all airlines are able to buy it at the price or only Ukraine International Airlines.
