Minister of Infrastructure Volodymyr Omelian has said that the number of airports in Ukraine should increase to 50 by the year 2020, the uaprom.info publication reports.

"We have an ambitious plan to increase the number of airports to 50 by 2020, which also means an airport in Kropyvnytskyi," the minister said.

According to him, some airports can and should operate as hubs, particularly the airports in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, and Lviv.

At the same time, the minister noted that some airports can operate only as regional airports serving one or another part of Ukraine.

According to Omelian, a separate category of airports can provide internal links between regions or regional centers of Ukraine.

As reported, a number of underused aerodromes (Gostomel, Bila Tserkva, Zhytomyr, and others) have recently become the focus of attention in light of Ryanair's unsuccessful attempt to enter the Ukrainian market.

Experts have suggested selecting an airport near Kyiv and developing it into a hub for low-cost airlines.
