The Odesa international airport handled 949,000 passengers in 2015, which is 9.8% more than it handled in 2014, the press service of the airport has announced.
The airport handled 758,000 passengers on international flights (a 9.3% increase) and 191,000 on domestic flights (a 12.2% increase). The total number of flights that landed or took off at the airport last year is 11,409.
"Following the fall in transport volume in 2014, recovery of passenger traffic was observed at the level of 25-40% per month from April 2015. We expect the trend toward an increase in passenger traffic to continue this year. With the prospect of introduction of a visa-free regime between Ukraine and the European Union, traffic with countries of the European Union will certainly increase," the press service quoted the Odesa airport’s Director Vitalii Portianko as saying.
According to the press service, the LOT Airline has increased the frequency of its flights on the Warsaw-Odesa route to seven per week and Ukraine International Airlines increased the frequency of its flights on the Odesa-Istanbul route to two per day in January 2016.
Ukraine International Airlines is expected to begin operating daily flights to Tel Aviv during the summer season. Lufthansa Airlines will resume flights to Munich in March, operating two flights per week.
In April, Czech Airlines will begin operating flights on the Odesa-Prague route three times per week and Austrian Airlines will switch to daily flights on the Odesa-Vienna route. Also in April 2016, YanAir plans to launch Odesa-Tel Aviv flights at the frequency of four flights per week. A decision has also been made to increase the frequency of the Ellinair airline’s flights to Thessaloniki.
