Newag and Skinest Ukraine signed a framework agreement for joint modernizing of M62 diesel locomotives. Signature took place in Kyiv during an international forum "Polish Business Day", that was held on November, 26, the Newag's press service reported.

Design Team of Newag prepared the prototype of modernized M62 locomotive with new features that will allow to increase the reliability rate, to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The engine's power of the prototype will boost due to modern power-generating unit (comprising a motor and a generator). Also a brand-new locomotive body will be used as well as the driver’s cab will become more comfortable.

"The design and technology works have practically been completed. Ukraine may receive several dozen modernized diesel locomotives as early as next year”, – informed Zbigniew Konieczek, NEWAG’s CEO

Daugavpils Rolling Stock Repair Plant (Latvia) will be engaged in this project.

The project is to be financed with the support of Polish export support funds and with participation of commercial banks.

Experts estimate the Ukrainian market present needs at 150 – 200 modernized locomotives. Nearly 80% of goods in Ukraine are transported by rail and the rolling stock wear rate has reached 80%.

Newag S.A. has a long-term experience in modernizing diesel locomotives. It has held a leader position in this market for two years. The Com­pany also has the technology to modernize broad gauge locomotives for PKP LHS and Kolprem.

Skinest Ukraine is a subsidiary of the international Estonia-based corporation Skinest Rail. The company has a large experience in repairing of rolling stock and forwarding services.
