Sales of electric cars in Ukraine quadrupled in the period of January-August, compared with the corresponding period of last year, replyua.net.ua reports, citing statistical data from the Interior Affairs Ministry’s department of information and analytical support.

The sales leader was the Japanese automaker Nissan - 149 electric cars manufactured by this company were sold during this period. Tesla Motors (United States) was second with sales of 21 of its Model S electric cars. In addition, Ukrainians bought 19 electric cars manufactured by Renault (France).

The Interior Affairs Ministry began compiling sales statistics in 2013. There was virtually no interest in electric cars in Ukraine in 2013 and 2014. However, interest in them surged in 2015.

Sales of electric cars in Ukraine exceeded sales in Poland (138 electric cars), Slovakia (81), Russia (50), Hungary (35), and Romania (11) in the first half of 2015. Ukraine may well overtake the Czech Republic, where 239 electric cars were sold, in the near future, replyua.net.ua said.
