Slovakia has confirmed its readiness to launch a new Kyiv-Bratislava train in mid-December.
This was announced during the sixth meeting of the Ukrainian-Slovak Mixed Commission, the CFTS portal reports, citing the Ukrainian Ministry of Economy.
Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Yulia Svyrydenko headed the Ukrainian delegation at the meeting while Slovakia's Deputy Prime Minister for the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and Use of Euro Funds Peter Kmec headed the Slovak delegation.
According to Kmec, an agreement was reached to establish a Kyiv-Bratislava railway connection with transfers at the Chop station.
The route’s design takes into account the ongoing construction of a European-gauge railway track between Uzhhorod and Chop in Ukraine and the possible future direct line Uzhhorod - Chop - Košice - Bratislava, with a view to extending this route to other European countries.
The new train is expected to be launched in mid-December.
"We have observed an increase in the volume of rail freight traffic both last year and this year. Passenger traffic is also growing. That is why it is so important for us to develop international passenger rail connections between Ukraine and Slovakia," Svyrydenko said.
