Traffic enforcement cameras have begun recording traffic violations committed by owners of vehicles with foreign registration numbers.

According to the Economic Pravda publication, this was announced by Deputy Minister of Interior Affairs Anton Heraschenko.

"Traffic enforcement cameras have begun registering traffic violations committed by owners of vehicles with foreign registration numbers. This means that from yesterday, foreign citizens who drive their cars into Ukraine and citizens of Ukraine who drive cars with foreign registration numbers will begin bearing responsibility for speeding and violation of other traffic rules," Heraschenko said.

"How does it work? When a car with foreign registration numbers enters Ukraine, a border guard enters the car’s number and the full name and passport data of the person driving it into a database. Subsequently, if the driver of this car exceeds the speed limit, the system automatically brings up his data from the State Border Guard Service’s database," he said.

According to Heraschenko, when a vehicle with foreign registration numbers is leaving Ukraine, border guards will bring up its record of traffic violations during its stay in Ukraine, inform the driver of the vehicle about the violations, and ask the driver to pay the relevant fine. If the driver is a foreigner, he will be prohibited from entering Ukraine if he refuses to pay the fine.

If the owner of the foreign-registered vehicle is a citizen of Ukraine and refuses to pay the fine, his documents will be sent to the State Bailiff Service, which will collect the fine through seizure of property or freezing of bank accounts.
