The reconstruction of an international automobile border crossing on the Ukrainian-Hungarian border is beginning under the European Union's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) grant program.

The Ukrainian State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.

The Luzhanka–Beregsurány automobile border crossing is of strategic importance for transport links between the two countries. It is located on the M-24 international highway, which is part of the Mediterranean transport corridor within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

The reconstruction will help to increase trade, improve security, and increase capacity and comfort at the border.

The project, registered under the code No. 101122743-22-EU-TG-HU-UA Road BCPs, has a total budget of EUR 11.6 million, which is financed by a grant from the European Union and a loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB). Half of this amount is a grant from the European Union and the other half is a loan from the European Investment Bank.

At the Luzhanka automobile border crossing in the Zakarpattia region, the project involves the reconstruction of an access road, the construction of a pedestrian zone and additional checkpoints for various types of vehicles, and the installation of two Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) systems for trucks (at the entrance and exit).

"Together with our Hungarian counterparts, we plan to prepare a feasibility study for the overall development of automobile border crossings on the Ukrainian-Hungarian border," the statement said.

The reconstruction project will last until the end of 2026. By the end of November this year, the Zakarpattia Regional Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure plans to launch procedures for the procurement of works and services necessary for the implementation of the project.
