The Ukrainian Armed Forces, together with units of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, have destroyed the large Russian landing ship Caesar Kunikov.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.
The ship was in the territorial waters of Ukraine near Alupka at the time of the attack.
The Russian ship sank as a result of the successful attack.
According to the statement, the enemy ship was attacked by Magura V5 naval attack drones.
The Caesar Kunikov is one of Russia’s largest landing ships. It was built in 1986 at the Gdańsk shipyard as part of the 775 Project. It could carry ten pieces of equipment and over 300 troops. The ship could accommodate a crew of 87.
The ship took part in the war between Russia and Georgia in 2008, supplied the Russian military grouping in Syria, and took part in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
According to the statement, this was not the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ first attempt to destroy this enemy ship. Back in the spring of 2022, the Ukrainian military destroyed Russia’s large landing ship Saratov and damaged the Caesar Kunikov in Berdiansk.
The Caesar Kunikov was one of the ships that were spotted in the Kerch Strait just before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 21 February 2022.
