Port operators in Ukrainian seaports handled more than 27 million tons of cargo in the first two months of 2020, which is 17% or almost 4 million tons more than the volume they handled in the corresponding period of last year.

The Ukrainian Seaports Authority (USPA) announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.

As usual, the largest cargo volumes handled by Ukrainian seaports during this period were grains and ore.

Ukrainian seaports handled more than 9 million tons of grain in the first two months of 2020, which is almost 9.5% more than they handled in the corresponding period of last year. Export grain from Ukrainian agricultural producers accounted for more than 97% of this volume. Ukrainian seaports also handled 6.5 million tons of ore in the first two months of 2020, which is 41% more than they handled in in the corresponding period of last year.

Container handling continued its significant positive momentum in the first two months of 2020, with Ukrainian seaports handling almost 174,000 TEU in the period of January-February (a 20% increase compared with the corresponding period of last year).

Exports accounted for more than three quarters of transshipment volumes through Ukrainian seaports during this period, increasing by 15.5% to 21 million tons compared with the corresponding period of 2019. Transshipment of import cargoes increased by 27.5% to 4.2 million tons, including 1.4 million tons of coal (an increase of 180.7%) and 1.2 million tons of ore (an increase of 8%). Transshipment of transit cargoes increased by 15.8% to 1.7 million tons, including 0.5 million tons of ore (108.1% increase), and transshipment of domestic cargoes increased by 14% to 0.2 million tons.

The Pivdennyi seaport handled the largest cargo volume of cargo in Ukraine in the first two months of 2020. The seaport handled almost 9.5 million tons of cargo during this period (a 28.3% increase). The Mykolaiv seaport handled 5.2 million tons (a 4.6% increase), the Chornomorsk seaport 4.5 million tons (14% increase), and the Odesa seaport 4.3 million tons (7.3% increase). The Mariupol seaport joined the list of seaports handling more than 1 million tons of cargo this year. This port handled more than 1.1 million tons of cargo in the first two months of this year (56.6% increase).

In total, Ukrainian seaports processed 1,833 vessels in the period of January-February 2020, which is 6.2% or 107 vessels more than the number they processed in the corresponding period of 2019.

As the CFTS portal reported, Ukrainian seaports increased cargo transshipment by 20% in January 2020.
