Ukrainian seaports increased cargo transshipment by 19.4% to 114.5 million tons in the period of January-September 2019.
The Ukrainian Seaports Authority announced this in a statement, the CFTS portal reports.
According to the statement, grain and ore accounted for more than half of the total volume of cargo that passed through Ukrainian seaports during this period. In particular, Ukrainian seaports handled more than 37.6 million tons of grain cargoes in the period of January-September 2019, which is 36.9% more than they handled in the corresponding period of 2018.
Ukrainian seaports handled 26.987 million tons of ore in the period of January-September 2019, which is 32% more than they handled in in the corresponding period of 2018.
In addition, transshipment of chemicals, mineral fertilizers, and liquid bulk cargoes (crude oil, petroleum products, and others) increased by an average of 10% in the period of January-September 2019.
According to the Ukrainian Seaports Authority, container transshipment increased by 21% to 713,000 TEU in the period of January-September 2019.
Export cargo remains the main reason for the increase in the total transshipment volume. Transshipment of export cargoes increased by 23.5% to 86.269 million tons in the period of January-September 2019, compared with the corresponding period of 2018. Transshipment of import cargoes increased by 13% to 18.646 million tons and transshipment of transit cargoes by 2.4% to 8.181 million tons in the period of January-September 2019, compared with the corresponding period of 2018.
The Pivdennyi, Mykolaiv, Chornomorsk, and Odesa seaports were the leading Ukrainian seaports in terms of transshipment volumes during the period of January-September 2019. These seaports accounted for more than 87% of the total cargo transshipment volume. The Pivdennyi seaport handled more than 38.5 million tons (28.4% more than it handled in the corresponding period of 2018), the Mykolaiv seaport more than 23.8 million tons (20.4% increase), the Chornomorsk seaport 18.8 million tons (24.3% increase), and the Odesa seaport more than 18.1 million tons (17.5% increase).
Ukrainian seaports processed 8,733 vessels in the period of January-September 2019, which is 0.7% or 59 vessels more than they processed in the corresponding period of 2018. The Izmail seaport processed the largest number of vessels (2,658) during that period, followed by the Mykolaiv seaport (1,305), and the Chornomorsk seaport (1,123).
The largest increases in the number of ship calls during this period were at the Olvia seaport (31.7% increase), the Chornomorsk seaport (20.2% increase), and the Kherson seaport (15.7% increase).
As the CFTS reported earlier, Ukrainian seaports handled 100 million tons of cargo in the period of January-August 2019, a 19% increase compared with the corresponding period of 2018.
