The State Railway Administration (Ukrzaliznytsia) continues to automate railway level crossings with the aim of improving traffic safety standards and six crossings with bus traffic will be automated before the end of 2015, the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia announced.

In addition, 74 level crossings are currently being overhauled and pre-cast concrete flooring will be laid at 80 level crossings.

Installation of automatic color-light signaling equipment at five facilities will be completed by the end of the year: near the Perechyn station, on the Glyboka-Bukovynska-Berehomet railway stretch (Lviv railways), on the track No. 8 at the Dachne station (Odesa railways), on the track No. 1 at the Vinnytsia station, and on the approach to the Svitlovodsk station (Pivdenna railways).

The works are being performed within the framework of a sectoral program for improving the technical level and ensuring traffic safety at level crossings in the period of 2011-2015. Ukrzaliznytsia specialists have already begun developing a new program for re-equipment and modernization of level crossings in the period of 2016-2020.

Ukrainian railways have 5,259 level crossings, of which 4,055 are equipped with automatic signaling systems. The number of manually controlled level crossings is 1,458 and the number of automatic level crossings is 1,429. In total, 3,801 level crossings are not operated manually. On the roads with the heaviest vehicular traffic, 403 level crossings are equipped with additional barriers that seal off the entire width of the road.
