The Ukrainian Railways joint-stock company (Ukrzaliznytsia) is continuing the electrification of the Kovel-Izov-Polish border railway stretch.
Railway workers have begun installing overhead lines along the railway stretch, the CFTS portal reports.
In particular, work is continuing on the 43-kilometer Kovel-Ovadno railway stretch. In addition to the sets of work directly involving the electrification of tracks, railroad workers have repaired a total of 25 kilometers of tracks, completed the repairs of five office buildings, and repaired 10 railway switches and 6 railway platforms.
The electrification of the Kovel-Izov-Polish border railway stretch is strategically important for the industry and the country because it will significantly increase the volume of export freight transported by rail. In particular, it will increase the weight of freight trains from 4,600 tons to 5,500 tons, increase the throughput of the railway stretch, and reduce the delivery time of goods, reduce the operating costs of the railway by UAH 136.4 million per year, and reduce the emission of products of combustion into the atmosphere significantly (by up to 12,000 tons per year).
As reported earlier, Ukrzaliznytsia temporarily limited the volume of transportation of rail freight on transit through Ukraine at the beginning of the month because of the electrification of the Kovel-Izov-Polish border railway stretch and the modernization of the Znamianka-Zdolbuniv railway line.
